Challenge:
Create a prevention program for our peers against opioids.
What attracted you to this challenge?
I have always wanted to help people and families that have gone through opioid abuse and let others know that it doesn't just affect that one person, that it affects the whole family.
Who were your group members?
What is your story-where did you start; how did you finish?
We met with Senator Merritt and discussed having a convocation. As a group we went back to the drawing board and came up with what the convocation would look like and who we would have speaking at the event. We decided to have a doctor, chief of police, family member, recovered addict, and a mother who lost her child. We presented the convocation to Senator Merritt and he said that we needed a wow factor. Taking this into consideration we came up with stickers. Stickers are a big thing in the teenage world, everyone has them on water bottles and computers. Senator Merritt loved that idea and was completely for it! After talking to Mr. Kegley we could start this convocation next spring. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to speak at this convocation and have my name on it. My team mates and I did an amazing job and I couldn't be more proud.
How did you contribute?
We all contributed the same amount and came up with a convocation. Working together we came up with what it would look like and I would be one of the speakers in the convocation.
What are your takeaways? Positives, challenges and describe how you overcame one challenge and your lesson learned
- Positives: I met people who I would have never otherwise interacted with and learned how to be a team with them.
- Challenges:
- We met down at the state house and driving down there was a struggle a couple of times due to traffic.
- We could not find the area that Senator Merritt was in and was 20 minutes late on the first meeting.
- We met down at the state house and driving down there was a struggle a couple of times due to traffic.
- How I over came that challenge:
- I left earlier and found the fastest route.
- We asked someone to walk us to the door where he was located.
If you were to do it again what would you do differently?
I would make the time that the speakers could speak longer. They are telling a story and should get longer than 8 minutes to speak.
